Information Savvy

Eco enthusiasts, Stacy Mason (Spartanburg Soil and Water Conservation District Coordinator) and Jes Sdao (Spartanburg County Recycling Coordinator), visited The Trash Talkers today to give us a better grasp on composting.

Did you know that backyard composting has to have a ratio of 30 browns (leaves, mulch, etc.) to 1 green (fruits, vegetables, etc.)? More information will be provided for seventh and eighth grade homerooms coming soon...

"Talking Trash" with District One Employees, Superintendent, and Board Members!

Today, we discussed our future aspirations with District One employees, superintendent, and board members. We had the visitors complete a survey for the data portion of our project in the beginning of the presentation about their knowledge of composting. This was a giant step for us today, and we hope to continue our progress in educating not only adults, but students as well.

Composters in Training

Throughout the previous week, my team and I surveyed our 7th and 8th grade classmates through Google Forms. We asked our peers what their knowledge of composting was on a scale from 1-3; 1 being the least amount of knowledge, and 3 being the most. Our primary goal is to educate students that fall in the 41.2 percentile who have no knowledge of composting. Our next objective will be to train the 42.3 percentile that have an "okay" knowledge of composting to be able to educate their family and friends on the importance of composting.

Survey:
How much do you know about composting on a scale from 1-3
1-What is composting?
2-I know about composting, but I can't explain it.
3-I have an exceptional amount of knowledge on composting.

Student Council Meeting

Thanks to a mini-grant received from Spartanburg Soil and Water, CGS will be able to plant a new garden. The soil produced from the compost will help maintain the new garden and existing gardens on campus. Seventh and eighth grade members of  Student Council have approved a location for our new garden, the type of plants that will be used, and set a date and time for planting.

Yay! Donors Choose Supplies! =D

Our physical and chemical property soil kits finally arrived from our funded Donors Choose grant. We are so excited to use these to test our compost soil in the near future.

Engineering our Compost Bin!

We have prepared a compost area on campus made of free, reused wooden pallets.

There have been three purposes in the lifetime of these pallets, thus far. They were first used by a flooring company to transport flooring supplies. Secondly, our teacher advisor's husband built tables for their outdoor, rustic wedding last year (see picture below). Now, they are enclosing our school's compost.

REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE
...AND COMPOST, COMPOST, COMPOST!
