Talkin' Trash to 7th and 8th Grade Parents

The following information was included in email blasts to 7th and 8th grade parents:

COMPOSTING:
7th and 8th grade has started composting!
Please read more about it on our blog: http://campobellogramlingtrashtalkers.blogspot.com/
Reasons for composting:
  • Landfills are overflowing. Items in landfills require an extensive amount of time to decompose, if they decompose at all. Most items in landfills never decompose.
  • It is expensive to build and maintain landfills. According to Jes Sdao, the Recycling Coordinator for Spartanburg County, our local landfill, the Wellford Landfill, has a 400 acre footprint. The average cost to build and maintain a landfill is $100,000 to $300,000 per acre. A landfilll contains about 28% of organic matter that can be used for composting.
  • Our school needs to save valuable resources, like soil and water
. We spend about $1,600 on soil and mulch / year.

Composting was also featured in the November 7th and 8th grade newsletter, which was distributed to students and parents!

We just love talkin' trash!

We look forward to giving follow-up surveys to parents soon!
